This battle took place on 13 June 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. (No pl., 1640).Engraved oval portrait by Cornelis van Dalen after Simon Jacobsz. de Vlieger and Willem van de Velde I, with 2 angels playing trumpets and 3 sea battles of Duynkerken and Duyns. (Without printed text below; trimmed). Ca. 40 x 30 cm. Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598 - 1653) enjoys fame as a naval hero in Dutch history. In 1610, Tromp sailed to Guinea with his father, who had by then become a merchant. En route, their ship engaged in combat with seven pirate ships. His father was killed by a cannonball, after which the ship was boarded. Tromp was enslaved in Salé and was freed after two years. The Battle of The Downs in the English Channel took place on October 31, 1639. Tromp achieved a decisive victory over a Spanish war fleet of 55 ships. The Battle of Dunkirk took place on February 18, 1639. During the naval battle, Tromp, who commanded a fleet of 11 ships aboard the flagship Aemilia, defeated a fleet of Dunkirk privateers twice their size.Cf. Muller, Portretten, 5441 e. Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden. - This is one of many different versions of the engraving on the title-page of Gerrit de Veer, Waerachtige beschryvinghe van drie seijlagien (1598). Willem Barentsz succeeded in rounding the northern tip of Novaya Zemlya, but the ship subsequently became trapped in the ice on the coast. A hut was built from timber from the ship and washed-up driftwood to allow for the wintering on the island. This shelter became known as the Behouden Huys.This engraving depicts four images of the Dutch wintering on Novaya Zemlya in a wooden cabin by Willem Barentsz and his crew in 1596-97.
