Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-1858) came of a noted family of German artists. He spent the early 1820s in Brazil making a series of topographical, social and ethnographic studies of the country. These were the basis for a monumental book which contained more than 100 plates, It is a hugh important record of early 19th century Brazil and shows the significant role of slavery in Brazilian societry. SCHWENCKFELD, Caspar. Caspar Schwenckfeldius ab Ossing eques nobilis Silesius. (No pl.), 1561. Engraved portrait with decoration in two corners and two lines in Latin below. (1 corner sl. damaged). Ca. 13,5 x 10,5 cm. Caspar Schwenckfeld von Ossig (1490 - 1561) was a German theologian, writer, and preacher who became a Protestant Reformer and spiritualist. He was one of the earliest promoters of the Protestant Reformation in Silesia. He developed his own principles and had his own views on the sacraments. His followers became a new sect, which was outlawed in Germany, but his ideas influenced Anabaptism, Pietism on mainland Europe, and Puritanism in England. Many of his followers were persecuted in Europe and thus forced to either convert or flee. Schwenckfeld did not organize a separate church during his lifetime, but followers seemed to gather around his writings and sermons. One group arrived in the new colony of Pennsylvania in 1731, followed by five more migrations up to 1737. They became part of the larger Pennsylvania German or Pennsylvania Dutch culture of the region. In 1782, the Society of Schwenkfelders was formed, and in 1909 the Schwenkfelder Church was organized. By the early 1800s there were no more Schwenkfelders living in Europe. Today, four Schwenkfelder churches are in Montgomery or Philadelphia Counties, but nowhere else. [Boeknr.: 38020 ]

One depicts on the left side the shipyard, in the middle 's Rijks Magazijn (former storehouse of the Dutch East India Company, now the Maritime Museum) and on the right side the mill and the Kattenburgerbrug. On the foreground the procession of eight sloops surrounded by many other boats and people on the waterside. The other one depicts the opening of the lock of the Ooster-Dok with the procession also surrounded by many other boats and people on the waterside. Van Speyk, Dutch lieutenant in the navy, blew himself up with his gun-boat on the river Schelde on February 5, 1831 to prevent the surrender to the Belgians. Ca. 53 x 44,5 cm The woodcut depicts the explosion of the Dutch warschip Alphen off Curaçao, signed Coldewijn. The printed text is dealing with Van Speyk. In Antwerp on the river Schelde, on February 5, 1831, Van Speyk' ship was boarded by revolution minded Belgians, who attempted to seize control. He fired his pistol into a barrel of gunpower setting off an enormous explosion, destroying the ship and killing dozens of people, himself included. Rare and handsome optical view of the bay and town of St. Eustatius also known affectionately to the locals as Statia, part of the Caribbean Netherlands, with numerous sailing boats in the foreground. It shows the island of St. Eustatius taken by the English fleet in February 1781. Admiral Rodney's sailors and troops pillaged the island. The Dutch regained control over the devastated island in 1784.On 16th November 1776, the Dutch commander of St. Eustatius, Johannes de Graaff, ordered a salute to be fired from the Dutch Fort Orange to the flag of the rebellious English colonies in North America.
