Large coloured board game with many illustrations including an illustration of Jan Companie, a black boy, friend of Michiel de Ruyter. Printed by J.A. Luii & co. in Amsterdam. Ca. 56 x 80 pp. Not much is known about the life of the black boy Jan Compagnie, but a library has been written about the so-called childhood friend of de Ruyter. It is known that adding Africans to portraits was fashion in the mid-seventeenth century. An African servant gave status to the person depicted. [Boeknr.: 37458 ]

(No pl.), G. Portielje, (1832).Two aquatint plates after H. Vettewinkel by W.H. Hoogkamer. Ca. 42 x 48,5 cm. Two views of the funeral procession on the water in Amsterdam of Van Speyk (1802-1831). One depicts on the left side the shipyard, in the middle 's Rijks Magazijn (former storehouse of the Dutch East India Company, now the Maritime Museum) and on the right side the mill and the Kattenburgerbrug. On the foreground the procession of eight sloops surrounded by many other boats and people on the waterside. The other one depicts the opening of the lock of the Ooster-Dok with the procession also surrounded by many other boats and people on the waterside. Van Speyk, Dutch lieutenant in the navy, blew himself up with his gun-boat on the river Schelde on February 5, 1831 to prevent the surrender to the Belgians. Amsterdam, J. Wendel en Zoon, (ca. 1831).Broadsheet with large woodcut depicting the explosion of a ship, letterpress in 4 columns and poem in 3 columns. Ca. 53 x 44,5 cm The woodcut depicts the explosion of the Dutch warschip Alphen off Curaçao, signed Coldewijn. The printed text is dealing with Van Speyk. In Antwerp on the river Schelde, on February 5, 1831, Van Speyk' ship was boarded by revolution minded Belgians, who attempted to seize control. He fired his pistol into a barrel of gunpower setting off an enormous explosion, destroying the ship and killing dozens of people, himself included. Van Speyk became a great Dutch hero for his courageous, or crazy, actions. - A scarce newsletter.Atlas van Stolk 6933; Cf. St. Eustache, eine der Antillischen Insuln in Nord-America welche 1781 von den Engelländern erobert und denen Holländern abgenomen worden. - St. Eustache, une des isles d'Antilles dans l'Amerique du Nord la quelle fut prise aux Hollandois en 1781 par les Anglois. Augsbourg, (ca. 1781).Contemporary handcoloured perspective view (vue d'optique or Guckkastenbild) by Bergmüller. Ca. 31 x 44,5 cm (including margins). Rare and handsome optical view of the bay and town of St. Eustatius also known affectionately to the locals as Statia, part of the Caribbean Netherlands, with numerous sailing boats in the foreground. It shows the island of St. Eustatius taken by the English fleet in February 1781. Admiral Rodney's sailors and troops pillaged the island. The Dutch regained control over the devastated island in 1784.On 16th November 1776, the Dutch commander of St. Eustatius, Johannes de Graaff, ordered a salute to be fired from the Dutch Fort Orange to the flag of the rebellious English colonies in North America. The North Americans regarded this salute as recognition of their independence and first acknowledgment by a foreign power. - A very attractive view. [Boeknr.: 21616 ]
