EVERTSEN, Cornelis. Den e. manhaften zeeheld Cornelis Evertsen, Lt. Admirael van Zeeland. (No place, ca. 1665).Engraved half length portrait with baton within laurel-wreath with his coat of arms and naval battles on both sides in the foreground by Aarnout de Jode. With five line poem . Ca. 48 x 34 cm. Cornelis Evertsen the Elder was born in Vlissingen in 1610. He was made a naval lieutenant at the age of seven following his father's death in battle, and he took part in a privateering raid in 1626, became a captain in 1636, captured a galleon at the 1639 Battle of the Downs, and was a Vice-Commodore by the start of the Anglo-Dutch Wars. He was wounded and captured at the 1653 Battle of Scheveningen, and he was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1654 and liberated Nyborg from the Swedish in 1659 during the Northern Wars. In 1661, he served under his close friend Michiel de Ruyter during his expedition against the Barbary pirates. During the Second Anglo-Dutch War, he became a lieutenand-admiral, fighting at the Battle of Lowestoft. He was cut in two by a cannonball during the Four Days Battle in 1666. Koerding, after Hendrick Berckman by Abraham Blotelingh. Ca. 44 x 34,5 cm. Jan Evertsen (1600 - 1666), a member of a Zealand seafarer's dynasty, is already at the age of 18 reported as captain of a ship. He fights near La Rochelle in 1625 under Willem de Zoete and in 1626 and 1627 in a campaign against the Barbary Coast under Laurens Reael. Between 1628 and 1636, he distinguished himself while fighting the Dunkirk corsairs. His greatest successes were in 1628 preventing the interception by the Dunkirkers of the captured treasure fleet of Piet Heyn and in 1636 the capture of the famous corsair Jacob Collaert. He also played an important part in the Dutch victory in the Battle of the Slaak against the Spanish. In 1637 he becomes Vice-Admiral and commands in 1639 a squadron in the Battle of the Downs in which he destroys the Portuguese Admiralship Santa Teresa, killing 800 of the 1000 men crew. - Jan Evertsen (1600 -1666) was the most important admiral from the heroic Evertsen dynasty from Zealand, all his five sons were named lieutenants by the Admiralty of Zeeland. - Fine.Muller, Portretten, 1593e; See Roos, Het admiralengeslacht Evertsen. GUIANA. - Land-kaart van het eiland en de volkplanting van Cayenne aan de kust van Zuid-Amerika. (Amsterdam, Isaac Tirion, ca. 1760). Engraved map, contemporary coloured by hand, with a large inset plan of the fortified town and castle to the upper right corner. Ca. 39 x 43 cm. A fine detailed map of Cayenne with many locations identified per key: sugar and coffee works, indigo plantations, the locations of native villages and a farmstead. An inset plan depicts the plan of the city with the cathedral, parade ground, Jesuit college, hospital, and the fortress. The region was not colonized until 1604, when the French founded their first settlement. It was soon destroyed by the Portuguese but the French colonists returned in 1643 and founded Cayenne. They were forced to leave once more following the attacks by the local Indigenous population. In 1664, France finally established a permanent settlement at Cayenne. Over the next decade the colony changed hands between the French, Dutch (1658-1664 and 1676), and English, before being restored to France.
