Depicted is the moment Tourville steps from one boat into another and is seized by an Englishman whose hand he will cut off with his sword. With at the right and central French ships. Depicting the canal houses with on the right the Oudemanhuispoort, and on the left the Nieuwe Doelenstraat. In front the canal with several vessels with spectators.With circumstantial description of the participants and the route. The naval Battle of the Dogger Bank took place on 5 August 1781 during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, part of the American War of Independence, in the North Sea. Twelve views in the interior of Guiana. - Ataraipu Rock, popularly known as Bottle Mountain or locally referred to as Devil's Rock, is a spectacular granite outcrop located in the Rupununi region of Guayana Esequiba. During 1831-5, under the direction of the Royal Geographical Society, Schomburgk (1804-1865) explored the rivers Essequibo (the sources of which he was the first to reach), Corentyn, and Berbice, and investigated in detail the capabilities of the colony of British Guiana. The bright hand-coloured views, from drawings executed by Charles Bentley (1805-1854) after sketches taken during the expedition, are produced in the richest possible colour by Ackermann, then one of the best lithographic firms in London. - Blank corners sl. damaged, otherwise fine. - One of the most beautiful of South American colour plates.Abbey, Travel, 720; Tooley, Coloured plates, 447; Borba de Moraes p.782; Sabin 77796. Bouchain is a commune in northern France. It lies halfway between Cambrai and Valenciennes.The Siege of Bouchain (9 August - 12 September 1711) was a siege of the War of the Spanish Succession, and the last major victory of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Marlborough broke through the French defensive lines and took Bouchain after a siege of 34 days. Its capture left Cambrai the only French-held fortress between the allied army and Paris. - Fine. Van Braam (1737-1803) wrecked with the frigate Huis in het Bosch, captain H.C. Steenis, on the Moorish coast on December 1751. After spending almost a year in slavery, he returned to Holland. He became a servant of the Dutch East India Company during the years 1764-1795. From 1817 to 1820 the botanist and traveller Martius (1794-1868) travelled in Brazil together with the zoologist Spix (1781-1826). Their journey was a scientific expedition, financed by king Maximillian Joseph I of Bavaria. - Famous slavery print of the Brazilian diamond mines. - Unobtrusive dampstain in margin left lower corner mainly to be seen on verso, few spots in margin, otherwise a very fine copy. Bruxelles, Degobert, (ca. 1850).Lithographed plate depicting a half-reclining nude with a string instrument and a parrot, with a black woman smoking a hookah next to her. Ca. 17,5 x 22 cm. Philippe-Jacques van Bree, a Belgian painter (1786 - 1871), was influenced by Orientalism. He often chose exotic subjects, often with nudes. An odalisque, Ottoman Turkish, was a chambermaid or a female attendant in a Turkish seraglio, particularly the court ladies in the household of the Ottoman sultan. In western European usage, the term came to mean the harem concubine, and refers to the eroticized artistic genre in which a woman is represented mostly or completely nude in a reclining position, often in the setting of a harem. (No pl.), cum privilegio ordinum Hollandiae et West-Frisiae, (ca. 1650).Engraving depicting sitting on the coast on the left a woman breastfeeding two children and on the right a man with a llama behind him. With a view of a sailing ship and the cape. Ca. 23 x 29 cm. In 1634 the Dutch managed to get hold of some strategic places around Cabo Agostinho in Brazil. A year later, in 1635, the Dutch got hold of the whole of Cabo São Agostinho. This meant a heavy blow for the Portuguese. CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. Le Cape de Bonne Esperance. Paris, Daumont, (ca. 1780).Contemporary handcoloured perspective view (vue d'optique or Guckkastenbild) depicting the Cape of Good Hope by Jan van Ryne. Ca. 25,5 x 41 cm. Fine optical view by the Dutch artist Jan van Ryne (ca. 1712-1760), he was believed to have worked in London about 1752-54, when he made an interesting engraving of Table Mountain and Bay, first published by Robert Sayer of Fleet St., London, in 1754, and provided the basis from which other prints were made, one being engraved in reverse in Paris (Gordon-Brown, Pictorial Africana, p.234). We offer the French version of this very attractive view of the Cape of Good Hope from the sea showing the Table Mountain and the company's buildings and many ships in Table Bay. It was an obligatory stop for all European ships going to the Indian Ocean or returning from there to Europe.
