The ship left Batavia (Jakarta) under captain Jacob Jansz. Stroom in 1661 and wrecked on a sandbank off the shore of Bengal and finally reached mainland Bengal where they were conscripted into the Mogul army to fight against the kingdom of Assam. The gruesome massacre of captives by the Nabob is described and followed by accounts of the kingdoms of Arrakan, Martabab, Tanassery, Bengala and Patan along the coast of the Bay of Bengal from modern Bangladesh to Burma. He came into conflict with conservative opponents who were at the same time his superiors. S.C. Nederburgh had him arrested and incarcerated, charging him, among other things, with fraud. Van Hogendorp managed to escape by way of Bencoolen, Sumatra (1798) and was safely repatriated in the Netherlands where he drew attention to himself in a long series of writings. At the time, the Portuguese Empire held a monopoly on the spice trade, and the voyage was a symbolic victory for the Dutch, even though the voyage itself was a disaster. Robertus Junius (1606-1655) was the second VOC missionary sent to Dutch Formosa. He served two terms on the island for a total of fourteen years. From 1633 to 1639, he served in the same area as Georgius Candidius, the first missionary on Formosa. The mission on Formosa is unique in the history of the VOC, as it was the only area of ??the Company's possessions where a church emerged among non-Christians. This was largely due to Junius's efforts. Considered in Dutch church history as the reformer of Formosa, he baptized about 5,500 adults and educated 50 primary school teachers.
