CXVIII. - The reputation of Captain Jean Hamlin and his crew was horrible at the end of the seventeenth century. Although Hamlin himself managed to stay out of the hands of the authorities, this did not apply to part of the crews of the Trompeuse and the Resolution. Various groups were brought to justice in Suriname and on St. Thomas. The collection of interrogations of crew members included in this book makes much clear about the background of the pirates, the life on board these ships and how these pirates determined their strategy and field of operation. GELDER, Roelof van. Dichter in de jungle. John Gabriel Stedman (1744-1797). Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Atlas Contact, 2018. Boards, with dust-jacket. With 4 maps and 57 illustrations on 18 coloured plates. 400 pp. Impressive biography of Captain John Gabriel Stedman, author of Narrative, of a five years' expedition, against the revolted negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the Wild Coast of South America; from the year 1772, to 1777. First published in London in 1796, it has gone through more than twenty editions in six languages; it shows the impact made at the time by Stedman's Narrative of his experiences in Guiana. Stedman, an officer in the Scots Brigade in Holland, volunteered for service against the negroes in Dutch Guiana. While out there he to all intents married Joanna, a Mulatto, and had a son by her, who became a midshipsman in the British Navy, but died young. While Stedman did his duty as a soldier he does not disguise his sympathy with the rebels. His description of the cruelties practised on the negroes, and of the moral deterioration resulting to their masters, forms one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have ever been penned. KEMPEN, Michiel van. (Red.). Hilversum, Verloren, 2020. Wrappers. With illustrations. Contributions by Bert Paasman, Hilde Neus, Aminata Cairo, Adrienne Zuiderweg, Remco Raben, etc. [Boeknr.: 36089 ]
