It was the first interdisciplinary polar expedition carried out by competent professional scientists. There is no exaggeration in saying that this enterprise initiated scientific polar exploration, and that Torell is rightly looked upon, not only as the 'father' of Swedish polar exploration, but as the founder of scientific polar exploration in general' (Liljequist, High latitudes, p.38).
