He took leave and went in a caleche with two horses from Vienna through Hungary and Bulgaria to Istanbul. After an excursion to the Troad and Izmir he returned to Vienna via Syria, Alexandria and Athens. Palmer was a highly resourceful and courageous adventurer and during these travels many places were explored for the first time.
