XII,461 pp. First edition. - 'Because of his linguistic abilities, Earl was employed on various expeditions to the South Pacific. On one of his voyages he was sent by the Dutch government to help in the investigation of the massacre, by natives, of British subjects on Melville Island. He traveled to and wrote extensively about Australia. This lengthy journey started in Western Australia and from there he sailed through the East Indies to Singapore. There are three long chapters on the state of Singapore. The appendix includes a chapter of 'Observations on the unexplored parts of north and north-western Australia' (Hill p.185). Earl also visited and describes Java, Batavia, Siam, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo, with remarks on the manners and customs of the aborigines, head-hunting, opium-smoking, slavery, Lanun pirates, gold and diamond mines and other commercial resources, orang-utangs, baboons and other fauna. From: Histoire abrégée des Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas. - Decorative anonymous engraving published in anticipation of the Company's centenary in 1701, depicting the organization of the VOC with in the middle the council room with the seventeen directors, on the left side the six chambers (Amsterdam, Middelburg, Rotterdam, Delft, Hoorn, Enkhuizen) and on the right side the four councils, with letterpress. In 1602 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was formed. It was the largest and most powerful trade and shipping company in the worl. At its peak it had 40.000 Dutch, other European, and Asian employees, a fleet of more than one hundred ships, and over six hundred stations in its charter area, spanning from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan. Proof state. - Rare complete set by and after Johan Christoffel Schultz (1749-1812), depicting an evening procession of shipyard-workers held on December 20th 1787 before the Arsenal of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, nowadays the National Maritime Museum. The workmen, Orangists in honour of stadhouder Willem V, show their standards and decorated tools, of the shipyard of the admiralty (1), The East India Company (2) and of the shipyard of the city of Amsterdam (3). 'Ze stellen de groote optogten, allen bij avond, met lampions en fakkellicht, van Wittenburg en het Admiraliteits-Magazijn uitgaande, voor, met alle zinnebeelden, werktuigen, insigniën, enz. en zijn daardoor zeer curieus voor de geschiedenis van dien tijd. Anna (Anneke) van der Feer (1902-1956) was a painter and a convinced communist. Life and art were a unity for her. She was an independent woman and a political activist. Her life and art served the working class. In 1928 she got into a relationship with the filmmaker Joris Ivens and in 1931 they moved to Moscow. She made drawings there which she sent to the Netherlands for political magazines. Ivens left Moscow in 1936, but Van der Feer still lived there. She was convinced that she was involved in a decisive struggle, after which she lived in Paris and in 1940 she resettled in Amsterdam.
