Thence he went back to the Lake Manasarowar along the Tsangpo and descended the Indus, and then towards Leh and returned to Simla by the Sutlej route. He made his way back to Sweden via Japan and the Trans-Siberian Railway, reaching Stockholm in January 1909 after an absence of three years. XXXII,574 pp. First published in London in 1854. - The author, a botanist, explored the Sikkim and East Nepal Himalaya in the years of 1848-50. This is an account of his journey and his botanical observations, and is a classical Himalayan literature in the early Himalayan explorations (Yakushi). Hooker's journal further displayed his observant nature with his many pertinent comments on the social and cultural characteristics of the natives he met (Riddick 127).
