BRASSEY, Annie. Sunshine and storm in the East, or cruises to Cyprus and Constantinople. London, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1881.Original pictorial red cloth gilt, all edges gilt. With 2 folding coloured maps and ca. 100 woodengravings (9 full-page) after A.V. Bingham. XXI,488 pp. First published in 1880. - This book by Lady Brassey (1839-1887) describes two journeys, one between September 1874 and January 1875 to Constantinople and the Ionian Islands, and a three months'voyage to Cyprus and Constantinople in 1878. These Mediterranean cruises included many days on shore, with visits to the harems of the nieces of the Viceroy of Egypt and elsewhere. It was a great mistake of the Turks, wrote Mrs Brassey, to think they could educate their wives and daughters, and still keep them in confinement and subjection (Theakstone, Victorian & Edwardian women travellers, p.33). 'The Victorian public welcomed Annie Brassey's books with an enthusiasm reserved nowadays for episodes of a soap opera. She was rich, carefree, idyllically happy with a handsome, distinguished husband and bonny children, and spent her life enjoying genial adventures at sea on what seemed like a non-stop holiday' (Robinson, Wayward women, p.204).
