(8),328; 253, (22) pp. First published in 1676; large paper copy. - Wouter Schouten (1638-1704) spent 7 years as a physician in the service of the VOC in the East 1658-1665. He was an observant traveller who explored inland into environs of nearly everey port-of-call. His travel-account stayed very popular for a long time because of his ample and vivid descriptions of the countries, the different peoples and anything of note concerning the animals, plants, etc. of Java, Amboyna, Ternate, Celebes, Cape of Good Hope, coast of Coromandel, Malabar, Persia, Arabia, Ceylon, etc. Because of the bad weather the fleet arrived on the return voyage in Bergen (Norway), where Schouten eyewitnessed the attack by the English in 1665. - (Missing pp.291/292; portrait and 15 plates; last pp. stained).Tiele 991; Cat. From: Gezigten uit Neêrlands Indië, naar de natuur geteekend en beschreven. - Fine coloured set of views depicting main locations in Batavia (nowadays Jakarta) : Aanlegplaats der sloepen te Batavia, Gezigt te Rijswijk (Batavia), Woonplaats der Europeanen te Batavia, De Willemsker te Batavia, and Het Societeitsgebouw de Harmonie (Batavia). Van de Velde (1818-1898) was trained as a naval officer at the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine, where he received drawing lessons from Petrus Johannes Schotel (1808-1865), one of the best known Dutch naval artists of the 19th century. From 1837 Van de Velde sailed as midshipsman aboard the naval corvet Triton in the Indonesian Archipelago. In 1839 he left the ship to work at the Hydrographic Bureau, Batavia, with the commission for the improvement of nautical charts of Indonesia. His fine sketches were transferred on stone by Paulus Lauters, one of the most renowned of Belgian lithographers. Published by Frans Buffa en Zonen, at that time the most famous lithographic workshop in Amsterdam. - An attractive set.Tiele 1136; Cat.
