London, 1819; warranted by the publisher on half-title in manuscript. - A famous, even notorious, voyage, led by Captain John Ross. As his lieutenants, Ross had aboard his nephew James Clark Ross, William Parry, and Edwin Sabone, all of future fame as explorers. Ross attempted to proceed westward through Lancaster Sound, but presumably deceived by a mirage, he described the passage as barred by a range of mountains, which he named the Croker Mountains, despite the disbelief of his colleagues (Hill 1488). The controversy had discredited Ross in the eyes of the Admiralty and for the next ten years he received no further commissions for exploratory voyages (Howgego II, R28). Ross began a new era in Arctic research (Stam, Books on ice, p.21). - (Age-browned). - Very rare.Cat. NHSM I, p.304; not in Tiele; Sabin 73380; Arctic Bibl. 14873. [Boeknr.: 36194 ]

WILLEM BARENTS. Verslagen omtrent den eersten - zevenden tocht van de Willem Barents naar de Noordelijke IJszee in de jaren 1878-84. Uitgebracht aan het Comité van Uitvoering / Bestuur der Vereeniging Willem Barents. Amsterdam, C.L. Brinkman, Haarlem, H.D. Tjeenk Willink, 1880-85.7 volumes in 2. Contemporary cloth. With 3 profils (2 folding), 4 chromo-lithographed plates, 9 coloured maps (8 folding) and 17 full-page woodengraved plates. Privately printed. - Official accounts of the Dutch expeditions to the Arctic with the schooner Willem Barents in the Barents and Kara seas, based on diaries. Following the founding of the Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (Dutch Geographical Society) in 1873 there was a brief revival of Dutch interest and participation in the Arctic. The schooner Willem Barents, specially built for the purpose, made annual voyages into the European Arctic from 1878 to 1884, placing memorial stones at sites where the Dutch had operated in earlier centuries and collecting scientific data. During the International Polar Year, 1882-83 the Dutch expedition was caught in pack ice and its ship Varna was lost. Thereafter Dutch interest in the Arctic waned, and Willem Barents was sold in 1886. - Rare complete set describing the Dutch activities in the Arctic in the late 19th century. Cat. NHSM I, p.310.
