Dampier's descriptions of his wide-ranging buccaneering travels (he sailed around the world three times) include the account of the first English visit to Australia in 1688. His voyages marked the beginning of British scientific exploration of the Pacific and made known the profitable possibilities of the Pacific (Hill p.147).
