BOSMAN, Willem. A new and accurate description of the coast of Guinea, divided into the Gold, the Slave, and the Ivory Coasts. Containing a geographical, political and natural history of the kingdoms and countries: With a particular account of the rise, progress, and present condition of all the European settlements upon that coast; and the just measures for improving the several branches of the Guinea trade. 2nd edition. London, James Knapton, a.o., 1721.Contemporary mottled calf, with red morocco title-label to spine (extremities of spine sl. dam.). With folding engraved map of Guinea and 7 engraved plates. (8),456,(16) pp. Second English edition, first published in Dutch in 1704. - Willem Bosman (1672 - ?), employee of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and chief Dutch factor at the castle of Elmina, wrote the first authoritative and detailed account of the West Coast of Africa, during a 14 years' residence there. It is the chief source for the knowledge of the Dutch slave-trade during the second half of the 17th century. It also gives an interesting picture of international rivalry, current trade, and the wretched depraved existence of the European factors stationed permanently on the coast. The book is written in the form of letters to a friend. The last two letters are written by other authors. The first is written by David van Nyendael containing a description of Rio Formosa, or Benin. The second is written by Jan Snoek giving a description of the Tooth and Grain Coast. The fine plates depict the trade-settlements on the West African coast. 'Usually recognised as the standard work concerning the Gold Coast of this period' (Cardinall 256). - Fine. Cf. Tiele 174; Cf. Cat. NHSM I, p. 204; Paulitschke 894: 'Sehr wichtiges Reisewerk'; Gay 2808; Work p.6; Hogg 144b. [Boeknr.: 1527 ]
