Hooft (1581-1647) started to write in 1628 the first part of this work which was published for the first time in 1642. The second part was posthumously published by his son Aarnoud in 1654. His Nederlandsche Historien covers the period from Charles V's transfer of the government of the Netherlands to his son Philips II from 1555 until 1587, during the stay of the Earl of Leicester in the Netherlands. Also included the life of Hooft by Gerardt Brandt. The fine plates depict the battles of Haarlem, Alkmaar, Woerden, Leiden, Slot Vredesteyn Utrecht, Spanish inquisition, and 3 sea battles. The Spanish army tried to reconquer them but failed during the Siege of Leiden in 1574. In 1575 Philip II had to declare bankruptcy. As a result the Spanish soldiers did not receive any payment, and they mutinied, pillaging the countryside of Brabant and Flanders and the city of Antwerp, where 10,000 inhabitants in a city with 100,000 people were killed by the Spanish soldiers, who tried to kill all the local Protestants. This event discredited the Spanish army enormously. The Estates-General of the Netherlands, sitting in Brussels, wanted to end the war in 1577. However, some of the fervently Roman Catholic provincial Estates did not want to invite the Calvinists of Holland and Zeeland to join. By the terms of the Treaty of Ryswick (1697) Louis XIV retained the whole of Alsace, but he was forced to return Lorraine to its ruler and give up any gains on the right bank of the Rhine.
