As a naval surgeon aboard the Pleiad, Baikie sailed from England to the Niger Delta, on the west coast of Africa. Following the death of the ship's captain, Baikie took command of the expedition. Travelling by steamboat, he ascended the Niger to its principal tributary, the Benue, which he followed upstream for several hundred miles. First edition. - In the end of 1791 Beaver (1766-1813) associated himself with a scheme for colonising the island of Bulama on the coast of Africa, near Sierra Leone, and left England for that place on 14 April 1792. The whole affair from the beginning to have been conducted without forethought or knowledge. The would-be settlers were, for the most part, idle and dissipated. Beaver found himself at sea in command of a vessel of 200 tons, with 65 men, 24 women, and 31 children, mostly sea-sick, and all equally useless. When they landed, anything like disciplin was unattainable. The party, assembled on shore, proved ignorant alike of law, industry, or order. The directors lost heart and took a nearly opportunity of returning to England. The command devolved on Beaver, and during a period of eighteen months he endeavoured, by unceasing toil, to keep a little order and to promote a little industry; but the men were quite unfitted for the work and manner of life, and the greater number of them died. The misserable remnants of the party evacated the island in November 1793, and went to Sierra Leonne, whence Beaver obtained a passage to England, and arrived at Plymouth 17 May 1794 (DNB).- A good copy.

Second English edition, first published in Dutch in 1704. - Willem Bosman (1672 - ?), employee of the Dutch West India Company and chief Dutch factor at the castle of Elmina, wrote the first authoritative and detailed account of the West Coast of Africa, during a 14 years' residence there. It is the chief source for the knowledge of the Dutch slave-trade during the second half of the 17th century. It also gives an interesting picture of international rivalry, current trade, and the wretched depraved existence of the European factors stationed permanently on the coast. The plates depict a.o. the Dutch forts. 'Usually recognised as the standard work concerning the Gold Coast of this period' (Cardinall 256).- With armorial bookplate.

Second and best edition. - 'This important work contains the earliest information in English about Darfur (Sudan). Browne, inspired by Bruce's travels, went to Egypt in 1792 hoping to explore the oases in the eastern Sahara and to journey to the source of the White Nile. He reached El Fashur in Darfur and was the first Englishman to explore the temple of Jupiter Ammon at the Oasis of Siwa.. Browne was the first European to describe Darfur, which he reached with a Sudanese caravan in 1793. He was imprisoned there by the Sultan of Darfur. In 1796 he reached Egypt again by caravan and eventually returned to England via Syria and Constantinople' (Blackmer 219). Browne gives detailed descriptions of the cities he visits, as well as the history of Cairo and Egypt under the Arabs. He was murdered by Kurdish bandits in 1813 at the age of forty-five. - (Age-browned).

James Bruce, Laird of Kinnaird (1730-1794), the first European to undertake an expedition aimed specifically at finding the Nile's source, failed in his attempt, but his exploration paved the way for many more travelers who came after him. In mid-1768 Bruce ascended the Nile from Alexandria and journeyed into the Ethiopian interior. In 1770 he believed to have found the source of the Nile near Gondar, the ancient capital of Abyssinia. Still he was mistaken, as he had not reached the source of the Nile, but only that of its considerable tributary. He descended the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile at the site of present-day Khartoum. He was one of the earliest explorers to report this connection between the White and Blue Nile. The results of Bruce's travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography especially of Ethiopia. His very readable account is still fascinating today. The plates based on Bruce's own and Balugani's drawings include botanical and zoological specimens, antiquities and artefacts. - 'One of the most splendid narratives in the litterature of African exploration' (Hallet, Africa to 1875, p.110). - (Some minor foxing). - A fine set. - See illustration.

Second edition, first published in 1819. - 'The travels described here took place in 1813 and 1814. Burckhardt left Aleppo in 1812 and made his way to Cairo; he then carried out two journeys: one along the upper Nile and the other through the Nubian desert. These travels were edited from Burckhardt's journals by Leake; he also wrote the biographical memoir which is prefaced to the travels. This was the first of Burckhardt's works to be published and was followed by Travels in Syria, 1822' (Blackmer). Johann Ludwig (known in England as John Lewis) Burckhardt (1784-1817), Swiss scholar and explorer in Syria, Egypt and Arabia, is a heroic figure among travellers in the Levant. 'The wreck of the Medusa is one of the best known in the whole history of maritime enterprise, primarily because of Géricault's famous painting, 'The Raft of the Medusa'. It was also one of the worst examples of leadership ever given, in which panic drove out every vestige of common sense. The Meduse sailed on June 17, 1816, from Rochefort for Senegal. She carried M. Schmaltz, who had been appointed Governor of Senegal, and was commanded by Captain Chaumareys... The narrative by Corréard and Savigny created a great furor when it was published, and many denials, but the best evidence indicates that their account is essentially accurate' (Huntress 187C). - A fine copy.

First English edition. - The Commerce struck near Cape Bojador on August 28, 1815. The whole crew reached shore but the Arabs forced them back to the wreck. This was one of the most popular books of the 19th century in the United States, probably because of interest in the Arab countries developed in the wars with the Barbary States, and because of its interesting reverse view of slavery - Moors were considered Blacks, and in this narrative they were the owners of white Americans. - Good copy.

The city of Algiers (El Djazair), built in the form of an amphitheatre on the west side of a bay of same name, was since 1529 the most western outpost of the Ottoman sultan in North Africa. Barbarossa's efforts turned Algiers into the major base of the Barbary pirates for the next 300 years. The Dutch squadrons in the Mediterranean had many conflicts with the Algerian pirates. The bombardment of Algiers in 1816 made an end to the imprisonment of Dutch slaves and inaugurate the down-fall of the Algerian privateering. In 1830 the French captured Algiers and made it a military and administrative headquarters for their colonial empire in North and West Africa. - A beautiful coloured view. - Rare.
